Biographical Notes

Dr. Fakas has been a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing and Mathematics of the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) since June 2002. From January until May 2002, he was a Research Associate in the Computer Science Department of the University of Cyprus. In 2001, he was awarded an ERCIM (European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics) Fellowship and worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for Automatic Control of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. At EPFL he managed the CoHandle (Collaborative Environment for Remote Hands-on Learning Experimentation) project, a collaborative and co-operative web-based learning environment (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation). From 1999-2001, he worked as a Research Associate in the Computer Science Department of the University of Cyprus, managing the Cultural Journeys in the Information Society (CJIS) project (an INCO project funded by EC). From 1996-98, he worked as a Research Assistant in the Computation Department, UMIST, managing the ISM-S (funded by UMEM Ltd) and EUROBANQUET (funded by EU, ESPRIT III) projects.

Dr. Fakas obtained his Ph.D. in 1998, his M.Phil. in 1996 and, his B.Sc. in Computation in 1995; all from the Department of Computation, UMIST, Manchester, UK. Dr. Fakas has a number of publications in refereed journals and international conference proceedings. He is also currently participating in a SOCRATES Partnership (academics exchange) with Aristotle University of Thesaloniki, Greece and University of Cyprus, Cyprus.

He is also a warden at Montgomery Hall of Residence, Manchester Metropolitan University. Montgomery Hall is located in Whalley Range, i.e. 2 miles (3km) south of the Manchester City centre, and has over 250 student residents.

Awards

In 2001, he was awarded an ERCIM (European Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics) Fellowship. As part of the ERCIM fellowship, he worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for Automatic Control of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland (for 9 months, i.e. 1/2/2001-31/10/2001), and he is also to work at VTT, Oulou, Finland (for another 9 months- not yet).

Participation in Research Projects

Current Projects

SEEArchWeb: An Interactive Web-based Presentation of Southeastern European Archaeology project (10/2003- 10/2006), funded by the SOCRATES/MINERVA Programme, European Commission. The project will develop and present web-based distance learning resources for the Prehistory and Archaeology of South-eastern Europe. Other partners of this project are Aristotle University Of Thessaloniki, Greece, Foundation of Hellenic World, Greece, Open University of Catalonia, Spain, University Of Paris I, France, American University In Bulgaria and University Of Cyprus, Cyprus.

EPSRC CASE for New Academics (CNA) Studentship in collaboration with SibiLo (UK) Ltd (10/2003 – 10/2006). This project investigates mechanisms that address the integration of personal data (in the context of Data Protection Act) from different parts of an organisation. Data Spiders are proposed that can search corporate databases to identify and fetch “automated data”. Schema-design for relational databases varies immensely; thus, identifying a set of fields in a single database table or multiple tables as personal data and that they belong to the data subject requires the use of machine learning approaches.

This Project’s Web site is still under construction…..

Past Projects

Cultural Journeys in the Information Society (CJIS), (15/3/99-30/5/2002), (INCO Project- funded by the EU), Electronic Roads in the Information Society (ERIS) (funded by the Government of Cyprus), University of Cyprus. Development of the CJIS systems; an intelligent navigation environment that proposes Electronic Roads as a meta-form in exploring cultural content that can form Cultural Journeys.

eMersion and CoHandle (1/2/2001-31/10/2001), (funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, ERCIM Fellowship program), EPFL. Development of the Electronic laboratory Journal environment that emphasizes collaborative and cooperative work in the framework of remote experimentation carried out by a group of students located at different places.

extensible Retrieval Annotation Caching Engine (eRace), Collaborator, (1/1/2001-30/6/2002) (funded by the Cyprus National Research Promotion Foundation), University of Cyprus. eRACE collects information from heterogeneous Internet sources and protocols (Web, email, newsgroups) according to prespecified user profiles and interests.

EUROBANQUET (4/1996 –6/1998) (ESPRIT project funded by EU), UMIST. EUROBANQUET proposes an effective methodology for information System Evolution reflecting business and legislative changes.
