Biographical
Notes
Dr.
Fakas has been a Senior Lecturer in the Department
of Computing and Mathematics of the Manchester
Metropolitan University (MMU) since June 2002. From January until May
2002, he was a Research Associate in the Computer Science Department of the Dr.
Fakas obtained his Ph.D. in 1998, his M.Phil. in 1996 and, his B.Sc. in
Computation in 1995; all from the Department of Computation, UMIST, He
is also a warden at Montgomery Hall of
Residence,
Awards
In
2001, he was awarded an ERCIM (European
Research Consortium in Informatics and Mathematics) Fellowship. As part of
the ERCIM fellowship, he worked as a Research Associate at the Institute for
Automatic Control of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne
(EPFL), Switzerland (for
9 months, i.e. 1/2/2001-31/10/2001), and he
is also to work at VTT, Oulou, Finland (for another 9 months-
not yet).

in Research Projects
Current
Projects
SEEArchWeb: An
Interactive Web-based Presentation of Southeastern European Archaeology
project (10/2003- 10/2006),
funded by the SOCRATES/MINERVA Programme, European Commission. The project
will develop and present web-based distance learning resources for the
Prehistory and Archaeology of South-eastern EPSRC CASE for New Academics (CNA) Studentship in collaboration with SibiLo (UK) Ltd (10/2003 – 10/2006).
This project investigates mechanisms that address the integration of personal
data (in the context of Data Protection Act) from different parts of an
organisation. Data Spiders are proposed that can search corporate databases
to identify and fetch “automated data”. Schema-design for
relational databases varies immensely; thus, identifying a set of fields in a
single database table or multiple tables as personal data and that they
belong to the data subject requires the use of machine learning approaches. This
Project’s Web site is still under construction….. Past
Projects
Cultural Journeys in the
Information Society (CJIS), (15/3/99-30/5/2002),
(INCO Project- funded by the EU), Electronic Roads in the Information
Society (ERIS) (funded by the Government of Cyprus), eMersion
and CoHandle (1/2/2001-31/10/2001), (funded by the Swiss
National Science Foundation, ERCIM Fellowship program), EPFL. Development of
the Electronic laboratory Journal environment that emphasizes collaborative
and cooperative work in the framework of remote experimentation carried out
by a group of students located at different places. extensible Retrieval
Annotation Caching Engine (eRace),
Collaborator, (1/1/2001-30/6/2002) (funded by the
Cyprus National Research Promotion Foundation), EUROBANQUET
(4/1996 –6/1998) (ESPRIT project funded by EU), UMIST. EUROBANQUET proposes an
effective methodology for information System Evolution reflecting business
and legislative changes.

Research InterestsHis
research interests include Database
Systems. More precisely, his research activities in Database Systems
cover the following areas:
1) Keyword Searching in
Relational Databases: Object Summaries, (demo) 2) Automated
Generation of Personal Data Reports from Relational Databases and Compliance
with Data Protection Acts. He
also researches in Workflow Management Systems and Computer Supported
Cooperative Work. Dr. Fakas investigates Peer to Peer and Grid Workflow
Architectures, dynamic web enabled workflows. Other research interests also
include Computers in Education, Distance and Collaborative Learning.
